Werewolves of Auria

werewolf

Acting more like a secret society, the werewolves are, usually, sheep in wolves skins. They are basically humans, and born this way- they can transform into werewolves anytime they desire. They usually hide their true nature- only close friends and family know what they are, mostly. They cant stand the Elves, for they chased them away from their places in the forests years and years ago, so they will try provoke them anytime they find the occasion- attacking them directly or attacking the humans, especially those who elves seem to favor. They have secret meetings and plots for they want what they always wanted: supremacy in Auria. They are usually very loyal people and, in a war, they will fallow whoever they promised to fallow till the end.

Elves of Auria

Elf

Creatures of the forests, they were discreet about their presence until the war between strigoi and faes started. Elves are kind to the humans, even they consider them inferior species, and try help them. Mostly peaceful, they try negotiate with both parts, strigoi and humans and make peace between them- when their patience is over, they can be fierce warriors, but they will avoid a fight as much as possible, for they consider themselves as the ‘nobility’ of all creatures on earth and act like it. They surely not like that they have been troubled and had to come out in the light. Humans must be nice to them, even obey them, for they are, of course, the saviors.
Elves might be the most ancient, human-like race to ever live in the world. Naturally immortal and connected to nature, they remain unwearied with age. In addition to their immortality, an elf can recover from wounds which would normally kill a man. Nevertheless, an elf can be slain, die out of grief, or choose to stop their mortal life at own will.
Since the rise of mankind, they left their settlements around the globe to inhabit the northernmost places of the globe and those spots hidden deep in the biggest and darkest woods where men cannot and should not reach.
An elf is a rare sight among humankind, since they regard mortal men to be a scourge to nature with their need to expand their power as long as their short lives endure. Though, they’d prefer to send a group of their kin as ambassadors to try to set up peace between two nations in war rather than just sit and watch how humans kill each other, since in elven culture every living creature is one of mother earth’s children.
In general, elves are
Appreciated among the ones that are lucky enough to know one, for their incredibly beautiful features and wisdom, but most likely for the fact that an elf can keep a dying person alive if they are willing to share their immortality. Elven blood has magical properties, almost miraculous, which makes them a perfect prey for vicious werewolves or even an precious commodity for a strigoi.

                                                                            Sinaël

Sin

Sinaël was born in the year 270 A.D in the Scandinavian Peninsula, named hyperborea by elves. He is the grandson of the elf king, and so, he was raised to be a ranger like his siblings and his father’s siblings. During his youth, he had almost no contact with humans, as they weren’t that abundant in the northernmost places of the earth, but, with the course of time, and expeditions to the north, he began to feel curiosity for mortal men. Despite the refusal of his grandfather, Sinaël traveled to the south at the beginning of the middle ages to explore and study human society, eventually staying in Eastern Europe disguised as a traveling magi. His beauty was unusual, even for elves as he had different colored eyes, raven hair and ivory-pale skin; which could make him be confused for a strigoi if it wasn’t for the extremely long and pointy ears that he used to hide pinned under his hair.

Auria – a neverending story

Finding himself in a situation more difficult than ever, with the Ottomans at the borders of Auria and the new rumors whispered around Auria about some strange creatures haunting the forests and scaring the people, King Rene must make a quick decision… And, probably, a vital one. Auria always been a prosperous land and its people peaceful, not much used with wars recently. The volunteers in General Eliades` army are not many, few thousands young men and women ready for adventure, but the Ottoman threat requires more than that, for their well trained armies have tens and hundreds of thousands of soldiers. King Rene knows that well trained mercenaries cost gold… lots of gold! If, in the past, the neighbor kingdoms helped Auria as Auria helped them with gold, now nobody seems willing to help anymore- everyone fears the Ottomans, so they better keep their gold, just in case a war comes. Therefore, King Rene must do the only thing he promised himself will never do: negotiate terms with his cousin, the prisoner former King Armand Karam, probably the richest King in all Europe, for his father, respectful King Theodosius, stole the whole treasury of Auria in old times, when Auria was the richest Kingdom in Europe. Nobody knows how big this treasure is, except one person: Armand. And nobody knows where this treasure is hidden, except Armand again. For there are rumors he split it in 10 equal parts, each buried in different spots. But who knows? They can only be rumors, and Armand is not willing to talk about it at all.

King Rene, after hard and long talks and negotiations with his cousin finally gets to a decision: Armand shall contribute to the Treasury of Auria with two millions golden coins, and Rene will release him and give him back his old Castle, to rule together as Kings of Auria and, in need, help each other in the war against the Ottomans, if they shall ever attack Auria. Armand finally accepts Rene`s terms and sends his men in a precise spot in the forests to dig and bring the gold…  So much that few donkeys had to carry it to the castle on their backs. More gold that Rene hoped he will ever get… But this raises few important questions: if Armand unburied so much gold from one single spot, how much really he has left? And where? And what he will do with it?

King Rene knows the risks, but still… Auria`s peace is more important than any concerns right now!

Ilyas Hamid, the Ottoman General sent to negotiate with the Auria King, finds himself in a weird situation, for he faces two kings now. As soon as Armand is set free and returns to his castle, General Hamid is called to him. A couple of days later, he leaves Auria. Nobody knows what the two, Hamid and Armand, talked about, but both Kings receive a letter from the Sultan, trying to negotiate new terms, his tone more friendly than before. But Rene knows for sure that the threat remains, and the Ottomans are as greedy and sneaky as always have been.

                                                           ARMAND KARAM

Armand was always a mysterious figure around Auria, especially recently, while he has been locked inside King Rene`s castle, guarded and never allowed to get out anymore. After an unsuccessful escape months ago, when he was hunted down and brought back, no one heard a word about him anymore. Now, that he is back under the circumstances we all know, his future actions can be quite unpredictable. Being far less popular and close to common people than his cousin Rene, Armand had different ways of seeing things and doing things. Being unpopular among Aurians does not make him absent charm. He knows exactly what is going on around him, he has the power and the gold and he won’t hesitate do whatever it takes to get back what he considers to be his right: Kingdom of Auria. Even reserved when it comes about showing his true feelings, he cannot forgive Rene for keeping him prisoner for such a long time. Together with his strange dark charm and great mind, he will find his ways. Keeping the Nobles that didn’t choose Rene’s side close and gathering, step by step, an army of mercenaries might, finally, give him the thing he always wanted. Or not? Time will tell, but surely the new situation in Auria will make everyone more careful than ever before.

Mysterious side of Auria – unexpected visitors!

faeeee

FAES – A very long time ago, even before the Romans conquered the Aurian lands, a very peaceful tribe of people were living in this part of the world. Good farmers, they lived in a land on plenty. Every spring, before they started plant their crops, a grand Festival of Fertility took place, where everyone was invited: man or woman, young or old. Three High Priests, worshiping the Father Sun and three High Priestesses, worshiping the Mother Earth, gathered together on the field to perform the old ritual. A drop of blood from every person in the tribe, a cup of wine and a cup of honey, all mixed together inside the skull bones of a hero warrior… A virgin girl was chosen by the elders, a young woman considered pure and innocent, to make the sacrifice ritual for the Gods, a different girl each year. That year, they choose beautiful Amma, the daughter of the miller. And so, the ritual began in the early morning, when Father Sun was showing the first rays of light. All the tribe was gathered, encircling the field, old people, so old they had to be bought there in the arms of their families, and small babies in the arms of their mothers. Everyone had to be present. And so, the ritual begins! Priests and Priestesses murmuring their old chants that no one else knew while young Amma was walking around in circles, pouring the mixture of blood, wine and honey from the skull, almost drop by drop, on the plowed field, ready to be seeded. Behind her, a child of the village, with a small bag in his back, was planting the first crop of the year- garlic. Known for it’s miraculous properties and healing powers, garlic was the first plant seeded every year. But something happens… Amma, who was a very curious young woman, gets an idea: to drink from the skull and see what happens. Before anyone could stop her, the maiden takes a sip before the ritual was finished. The last drops… A thunder falls from the clear sky right in the middle of the field and, a moment later, every each person in the tribe was falling dead on the ground. Everyone, except Amma, who watched everything with big eyes, petrified. She drops the skull from her hands, falling on her knees, stunned with grief. But it was too late… The dreadful curse fell upon her and those who were, now, dead.

The spirits of the dead people, moaning, found no rest in the after life they were sent before their time on Earth was over. Gathered together and crying, all they could do was haunting the fields, for hundreds, and hundreds of years… A new tribe of people migrates on their lands, the Aurians, not long after this happened. They found the empty houses, the empty plowed fields and wondered ever since… What happened to the people? It remained a great mystery, until one day, when the spirits of the dead found a way to come back and seek for their salvation. For that, they needed find Amma and destroy her. But how to find her after so many hundreds of years? What happened to her?

Amma, for the sacrilege she made, was cursed. Cursed to never find rest again and never die, unless the fire burned her flesh. Cursed to only be able to feed from blood, wine and honey. Blood was her food, wine and honey were her drink.

The restless spirits of the dead came back… They used human energy to materialize, but they were not more than some vague silhouettes walking around the forests. People saw them… And called them Faes. But they were not strong enough, they needed more human energy to make them more powerful and also make them look almost human: flesh and bones. So they seek for stronger bounds with the humans, for they needed their approval to cross the line between one life and another, between one dimension to another. They needed this to be able to make their presence known and look for Amma. And they were ready to do whatever it takes for the humans, so be allowed to use their vital energy they depend on. A human is capable to ‘feed’ with energy one or more Faes, but all things have a cost! They need sign a contract with a human for two months. After two months, they can sign it again with same human it or simply find another human. The contract terms are discussed between the two parts.

How do Faes look like? Well, considering they were, once, humans, they very much keep the form of their humanity. Perhaps, sometimes, a bit more ethereal… Their skin can look very human, if they are fully materialized, but also can look pale, sometimes glowing. Their eyes and hair can have strange colors, and they can look fragile. In any case, they should keep their human look as much as possible. How are they dressed? They can dress however they like, but probably most of them will dress like they did when they were alive, looking more Ancient than Medieval.

STRIGOII – are the ‘children’ of Amma. She knew they (the Faes) will find a way to come to her someday, so she gathered an army of her own to protect herself from them. So she choose- young and strong men and women, capable to defend her, from all over the world, from all the places she traveled. She offered them what they wanted: eternity. Just as their Mother, they use blood as food and wine and honey as drink. They need it to survive. For this, they swore an oath to ever protect her, no matter what. One thing they were forbidden: to kill a human being or an animal. Amma could never forgive herself for killing all the people in her tribe. That doesn’t mean they always obey the law. If they can hide their crime well, they are capable of doing it.

Now, that the Faes found a way to return, Amma is determined to get rid of them and send them back into their world. Her children, Strigoii, were sent in Auria with the mission to stop the Faes. The best they can do is trying to keep Faes at distance, by attacking the humans that allow them to materialize, weakening them. A weak, hurt human is not capable give enough energy to their Fae(s) anymore, at least for a while. Kidnapping, torturing, draining humans of blood can weaken them very much and making them unable to provide enough vital energy, so, therefore, the Faes aren’t able to cross the line using the energy of that specific human, for few hours, days or weeks, depending on how bad their human was hurt. So, a Fae should do all they can to keep their human safe, even that means they have to fight the Strigoi away. The problem would be that Strigoii are stronger than a Fae, so it needs 2-3 Faes or more to chase a Strigoi away, or capture them. If a Strigoi is captured, though, the Faes and their humans should expect revenge. Strigoii care for each other very much and they do not allow their brothers and sister to be hurt. Can a Strigoi be destroyed? Yes, if they are burned. Old believes that they can be killed with a stake though their heart are not true. A Strigoi will not die in that case, but a stake though their heart could put them to ‘sleep’ for few hours, enough time for a human, if does that, to get as far as possible from that Strigoi. Garlic, as ancient medicine and charm plant, can chase a Strigoi- but only if he or she is young. Old Strigoii are immune to garlic.

Can a Strigoi travel under the sunlight? Yes. But they got used hide in the darkness of the night and sleep during day, for it was easier for them that way, during the centuries, to keep away from public eye. And easier to hunt, hidden in the shadows of the night. Where do they sleep? Nobody knows, they hide their places very well. They don’t want to risk being found.

Some of them will try to trick humans, and walk among them during the day, pretending they are humans. They can even get jobs in the city, talk and dress like humans… But better keep eyes wide opened! They never eat human food and have a very strong resistance to wine. They never get drunk. Of course, to fool humans, they could act like drunk now and then… That way, they can watch better and be closer to their food source, the humans, and their hate source, the Faes. They will never bind to Faes, for they would feel their energy and realize they are not humans. Of course, that does not mean that all unbounded humans are Strigoi! Not every human wants to be bounded. They are afraid and don’t want to deal with the Strigoi. Bounding can have advantages, but also disadvantages! Binding to Faes, as human, can get you in some trouble for sure. Being free human, you are way less exposed to the attacks of the Strigoii. But having a Fae, or more around you, on the other hand, can be very useful: Faes have magical powers and can keep humans healthy and vigorous. They know secret treasures and magic spells, they know magic herbs and ancient chants that can bring wealth and joy.

How do Strigoii look like? Considering Amma choose them carefully, the healthy and strong, they should look like it. Usually good looking young men and women, Strigoii can be very voluptuous and even swaggering, especially when they need something. They despise humans and their condition, but rarely showing it. They can be very charming creatures, but also dreadful creatures. They are merciless and intelligent. They like to play with humans as cats play with the mouse. Just like humans, they are perfectly capable of sexual activities, with one difference: they aren’t able to procreate. If they hunt humans for sex it’s just because they like to play. They love to be in control and fool humans every time they find the occasion. Never trust a Strigoi, because their lips tell lies, and they would tell you anything to fool you and enslave you. Avoid isolated places, especially in the night time- but remember, they can also walk in the day time… They probably won’t attack unbounded humans to drink their blood very much, but that doesn’t mean you are perfectly safe. Being careful is the best way!

Strigoii use to dress in dark colors and very much fallow the fashion of the century they live in, so they can be mistaken with humans. Dark colors keeps them more hard to be seen during the night time. They do not care wealth much, because they don’t need it. If they want objects, they simply steal them, for they are very fast and agile. A Strigoi has a beautiful ring and fancy clothes? You can be sure they have not paid a single bronze for what they have. If they have gold, it is stolen. So keep your treasures safe!

                                                                !!!IMPORTANT NOTE!!!

FAES – they are spirits, and NOT the ‘classic’ faes or fairies. If people called them ‘faes’ is because they thought they were faes when first saw hem in the forests of Auria, so, therefore, they kept calling them that way.

STRIGOII – do NOT mistake them with the vampires. Yes, they are somehow similar, but something else. No fangs, please, no huds, no bloodlines. How do they take human and animal blood to feed? Simply by using different tools: small daggers, needles, fake iron ‘nails’ and so on. The rest is just role play! Enjoy!

The Order of Solomonarii

Solomonarii (sg. Solomonar, also known as Kapnobatai)- the enigmatic creatures of the eastern European mythology, better known in Transylvania and Moldova, live half in the Legend, half in the reality of the traditional culture. Semidivine characters, the Solomoniarii are known among the people wearing different names: Hultani, Grindinari, Salmani or their ancient name, Kapnobatai. The legends say they are related with the jinns, especially with the Spirits of the Winds and Forests, assigning them powers like the taming and riding of the Dragons, heavenly ascents, the imposing of their own will upon the weather phenomena (especially hail and storm) and the power of healing.

The image of the Solomonar is one often unusual: they are seen like enigmatic creatures, even savage ones, dressed in rather unusual clothing. The props of a Solomonar usually contains an iron axe with magical powers from which he produce the hail with and also has the role of a lightning rod if implanted in the ground, a rein which he can tame the dragons, The Book of the Solomonarii, where all their power and knowledge is written down and a small wooden jar where he keeps the winds.

At the age of 7, the children chosen to be Solomonari are kidnapped from their parents by the old Solomonari and took in the caves of the Carpathian Mountains, in a secret place named The Core of the Earth, where they are kept, trained and taught to be a Solomonar until the day they reach 20 years of life. In this ‘school’, the Solomonari learn the language of all living creatures on Earth, all the charms and incantations and, after they learn all this, they retreat in a cave, alone, and write it all down in a book.

Some legends say they use to travel the world, disguised in beggars and, if people have a bad heart and don’t want to help them, they bring the storms upon their villages. All the money and food they get, they throw away on the rivers for the spirits.

In the ancient times, Solomonarii (called Kapnobatai those days) were the High Priests of the Sun God Zamolxes and the medieval name of the Kapnobatai, Solomonari, is but a derivate of the name of this ancient god, also knows as Salmoxes (Salmoxes – Solomonar).

I would also stop for a bit upon their other name, Hultan. Hultan, in old Romanian language means eagle, and one of the symbols of Zamolxes was the two headed eagle which means the duality: life and death, man and woman, light and dark, good and bad. Therefore, Solomonarii represent the duality themselves. They represent both life and death, the man and the woman, the good and the evil. They are both feared and loved.

The establishment of the Order of Solomonarii in Auria is an older idea of mine, but never found the right moment to do it. As Middle Ages were highly superstitious and filled with legends of supernatural creatures, I thought this could be a good way of practicing the magic in Auria roleplay, apart from the Order of the Priestesses, who belongs only to the women. A balance of powers, so to speak, and a great opportunity to roleplay for those interested in magic of any kind.

If interested to join, please contact Armand Karam or Eden Stroganov.

Slaves – a personal point of view

I must confess: I never played the role of a slave and had no slaves. You will probably wonder why on Earth I get to write an article about this? Well, because there is a reason I never played the role and never cared to have a slave in my roleplay: I do not like the idea of it in SL, as far as I noticed. I got to interact with different ‘slaves’ while I played in an ancient sim, or visiting Gorean realms. But we are not a Gorean sim, so I will not talk about it. I would like to suggest few things about (and for) the slaves we have and we shall have in Auria, mostly because I do not ‘flirt’ with the idea of Gorean slavery.

I know, Auria is not ancient sim, but the idea of ancient (mostly Roman and Greek) slavery is more appealing to me, in a roleplay of course. Auria has (or we try to make it have) many Medieval specifics. Medieval slaves were mostly used for physical activities, and the most important were: working the field and serving the Nobles in their homes, meaning: cooking, cleaning, serving at the table, taking care of the animals.

I would suggest for Auria more than just that. Auria is Medieval, but not quite a typical Medieval: we do not have the Christianity. Auria is Pagan, whatever that means. Why? Because we have people of different believes and religions playing, so why would make anyone uncomfortable? I could even say Auria, unlike the real medieval Kingdoms, is more of a ‘no religion’ place. We are not Middle Ages, we try to create a Middle Ages atmosphere for the players. To go back to the original idea of the paragraph, I shall tell you few things about the Ancient (especially Roman) slavery, so you understand my intentions and ideas better.

I shall not speak about the Roman slaves used on fields or basic housework. There were different types of slaves and, among them, those highly valued in the Roman society: the educated slaves. An educated slave was, for example, a librarian, an accountant, a secretary, a doctor, a teacher. Of course, doesn’t mean all those categories were slaves. Antinous, the personal slave of the Roman Emperor Hadrian was an excellent sportsman and a highly intelligent person with a great education. Philosopher Epictetus (stoic) spent his youth as a slave in Rome to Nero`s secretary, Epaphroditos. Epictetus was also the teacher of Arrian, the author of one of the most famous ancient history work, ‘Anabasis of Alexander’. The list can go on, but I think Epictetus is the best example of a ‘high-class’ slave and also proves what I wrote above.

Not to know such details about History is not a crime. But playing a slave in an Ancient sim like you play it in a Gorean sim is wrong. And highly inaccurate. Gor is fiction, History is not.

I was talking about realistic roleplay in my previous article- just do this exercise. Imagine you, as a flesh and bones person, sitting on your knees not for a whole day, but for an hour. Now imagine sitting like that for a day. Now for a month. You don’t need a high amount of knowledge of Anatomy to guess what would happen to your knees. Or what the long-term consequences for you would be after few months. How would that affect your feet, your bones, your muscles, your spine. Your health. Human body is not build to support it`s own weight on the knees. A slave on their knees was and should be a punished slave; in any case, not a day to day behavior.

What would I ask from my slaves, if I had any (and I shall have)? Well, many things, I can be a very demanding person. Depends on the task they have: a slave taking care of my house here in SL should be polite, entertaining with my guests, have a decent look (meaning I don’t wanna see rags or silks, unless I especially demand it), generally interested about whats going on around her/him. To be able to take care of their basic needs and not ask my permission every time they need to drink a glass of water. I want them have own relations and friends and understand I am not their friend, but their owner (or master, or whatever) and I don’t have either the time nor the interest to keep them around me 24/7 and take them with me on my visits or walks around the Kingdom. I play the role of a Count, which means I have many things to take care of, way more important than entertaining a slave with my presence. Of course, I would not ignore them and they would not ignore my needs and calls, but that doesn’t mean we need to suffocate each other.

An educated slave, well, that is different: such slaves should be more ‘outgoing’ than the housework slaves. A slave used as a secretary should know how to relate very well with those around, write my letters, keep my papers in order, ease the communication between me and the people I need communicate with, and so on. A doctor slave should keep me and those in my family and my home, including the other slaves, in good health and keep close relations with other doctors in the Kingdom, to exchange ideas, solutions, potions etc. I wouldn’t stop my slaves have a relationship or a love affair as long as that will not affect their work. They would have their free time, away from their work, in which they are allowed to socialize, go out, have fun with friends. Slaves are, after all, same human as I am. You, as a slave, have a love affair with the servant girl of another Noble House? Fine, feel free to live your love story in your free time, why not? Wanna marry? Well, we shall talk about that and decide whats the best way, especially if the chosen one belongs to someone else.

I am not interested in sex slaves, so I shall not speak about it. If I want sex with one of my slaves, I simply do it. You don’t need flirt with me – if I want it, I shall let you know that.

Of course, I can not impose my ideas to the other players, but I would truly like to see the slaves of Auria treated better than some statues or decorations sitting around, in a corner, ignored for hours and not able to have own life and fun. I don’t think its realistic or respectful for the person behind the monitor playing that slave.

Best regards and have fun in your roleplay!

Few things about roleplay

I had an interesting talk with one of my new friends today, so decided to write down some ideas considering the roleplay and the ‘making-of’ characters in a roleplay, hopefully my ideas and suggestions to be helpful! I insist on the fact that what I write down here are simply my ideas about things, based on my experiences around Second Life and roleplay.

So, to start with, I`ll talk about the making of a character, both in general and particular lines, to make it fit in Auria. This might help the new players (new in roleplay) and also those new in Auria who aren’t sure what role to choose.

I would start with some general lines: how to pick your character in a roleplay? Well, first thing first: most, if not all roleplay sims, deliver notecards with the information they consider you should know- the story (History) of the place, time period, rules of the place and so on. The first thing you are supposed to do is read those notes- maybe not all from the first, if they offer a lot of information, but you should know what the time period is at least, mostly because it`s not very nice (I don’t use word disrespectful very much, it has a higher meaning than simply being confused or not understanding exactly whats going on, humans do make mistakes without the intention of being disrespectful) to just walk around in an ancient Greek sim, even as a visitor, wearing your ripped blue jeans and your Nirvana t-shirt. Many sims do provide free clothing at the landing point- if you lack money, SL marketplace offers a great deal of free or very cheap stuff who might well match the time period the sim you are about to visit belongs.

Visit the sims! Stopping at the landing point and reading few notecards wont help you really get in the ‘middle’ of it, so to speak. Dare to walk around, dare to contact people if you need help (always in IM), avoid interrupt any roleplay going on, no matter how ‘in need’ you are.

Be very careful about the sim rules. Every each sim in SL is payed for, which means: they are private property of a person or a group of people. Consider it their home in SL, which they pay rent for; that means you need at least the basic of common sense. If you prove not to have it, well, you take the risk of being thrown out. You are a guest, so behave like a guest. You do not like the rules, or the roleplay going on? Means you need to keep searching for a place that suits you better, not to try change that place as you desire – that will not happen.

Also, if you ask for help and guidance, be sure you fallow the guidance. I had people contacting me, asking for help. What I first did, I sent them to collect the free notecards with information at the landing point, and I did got answers like ‘Well, that’s too much to read, you tell me!’. You need to understand that those notecards were made especially for you, to be a guide and a help, to make you understand whats going on. Also, you have to understand that the people made those notecards had a good reason: not to talk with each every new comer and explain them everything from a to z, just because the new comer is too lazy to take 10 minutes and read some simple useful notecards. I think those are basic things everyone should understand and accept.

How do you choose your character? Well, there are few basic questions you should ask yourself: Am I a man or a woman? Young or old? Rich or poor? Am I the dominant way or more the submissive way (neutral, maybe)? Am I a warrior or rather a philosopher? Do I like to be in charge or like to be guided in a RP? They sound as being general questions, yes- but they are a very good start. If you came from a past (in RP) where you were for example a servant and you enjoyed it, you might want to build your new character fallowing the same steps as before, unless, of course, you want to try something new. After you decide (you can also call for help!), you need to have a background story of your character, who gives it personality. A person does not come out of nowhere in this world, we all have a background in RL – same in a roleplay. Keep it on a realistic line: if you have a fisherman background in your story, you cannot come and claim the King to bestow you the role of a Nobleman. Relate your past life to your future role as much as possible.

Avoid the cliché, SL is full of lost princesses or people loosing their memory. Just don’t be that! Think of something original, give your character personality, strengths and weaknesses, Hercules and Xena exist only in mythology and films.

Also, study a bit! If you are about to roleplay in a Medieval sim, as Auria is, would be very nice to at least google something of the Medieval History of Europe, theres a lot of information on Internet. Reading few minutes about it could help you a lot understand the world you are about to step in. You don’t have to be a PhD in Medieval History at all, but having few notions of it would truly make things easier for you and those around you. And I shall give you an example: you get into Auria and choose the role of a miller. You meet Count Stroganov, in whatever circumstance. You don’t just ‘Hello, Eden! How are you?’- just don’t! Having a bit of classes understanding would do you very much good. If you do that, the Count might feel more than offended IC and react like it. Don’t be surprised if that happens! Unless, of course, you do want your character in big trouble. If you choose the role of a miller means you accepted to play a person of that social condition. Middle Ages is not modern days, where everyone is equal (more or less). Even in modern days, you prolly don’t just call your boss Johnny, but Mr. Smith, or whatever his name would be.

Don’t take IC things personally. If a Pirate tries to get rough on you and steal your gold, that’s it! Act the scene! If you don’t like the scene, avoid it or get an OOC understanding with the person playing the Pirate. And never forget that the others act on your characters, not you personally. If you quarrel IC with someone, don’t take it OOC. You are NOT your character. Neither is the other person.

Try build a good profile. If you like to roleplay or you are about to learn it, better write down few RP limits also. They have to be according to the game you involve in: if you go as a slave in Gor, for an example, you don’t write ‘No kneeling’ at your RP limits. If you go in an adult sim, most probably you wont have ‘No sex scenes’- they are hard to avoid in such a realm. You don’t like sex scenes, well, play somewhere else, if you want to avoid being involved or seeing them. And so on, the list could go on for ever. Remember, though, you are not OBLIGATED to do anything you are not comfortable with. If someone tries get you in a rape scene, for an instance, and you don’t wanna play it, better let that person know OOCly.

Avoid calling people names IC. Respect the other players and their characters as much as possible, no matter what position you have. Don’t be rude! In any case, don’t cross some limits. Don’t harass the other players. If you play a Pirate for an instance, it is your role to be the villain- but that doesn’t mean you have to offend the others. Walking on the streets and calling a lady a whore for example just because you are a Pirate and you are supposed to be mean wont do it. Be creative and play your own character!

Another thing I strongly recommend is never forget you are not alone in a RP. Be careful to those around, their IC needs and reactions. Don’t try get the RP for yourself, and I shall give another example from my personal experience: I was in the middle of a RP, when suddenly a lost princess (told you there are thousands around, on every corner of the street) comes along and, without the smallest care for the RP going on, she starts to cry around, screaming her lost princess problems, faint at our feet and, even more, letting us know in IM that we should react IC. All she got was a very clear passing-by from us, the players already involved in a RP. You just don’t do that- is lack of respect and you wont get anything, except being avoided by the other players.

Don’t be afraid to emote a bit! Emotes should be your 5 senses transposed in words, and not your thoughts… Remember people cannot read thoughts in RL. Describe your moves, your gestures, describe a color, an object, describe you feelings transposed in those moves and glances, describe a  taste or a smell, never a thought. The thoughts your write down as your dialogue. DO NOT emote for another, like: ‘Johnny rises his hand and slaps her face, seeing her scared eyes as she turns her gaze back at him’ – that is wrong. Perhaps she isn’t scared, perhaps she is furious, puzzled, even indifferent sometimes! You don’t know. Let the other person react to the slap, for its their right to react as they think they should!

I personally am not a big paragrapher. Mostly because it takes time to write it down and information could be revealed without writing down a whole novel while the others wait for your RP reaction. I prefer the <</me turns around, hearing man`s voice and glances straight in his eyes, confused ‘Oh! I thought you already left, or so your servant told me!’>> to   <</me turns around, his cape fluttering in the wind while he feels an itch in his eyes because of the dust of this very hot Summer day, hearing the deep unmistakable voice of his old friend from Paris, and looks straight in his blue big shady wonderful eyes, feeling all confused and surprised, telling him with a soft voice provoked by his recent illness kept him in bed for three weeks ‘Oh! I thought you already left, or so your servant told me!’>> And yes, I met that. I do not say its wrong… I just think its full of useless information and it takes time to write and read for the others. If it’s a roleplay that involves several players and all do that, for me, personally, it can get boring. A RP should be dynamic and enjoyable, not a whole series of paragraphs full of useless information. I don’t say don’t do it, if you enjoy it- I don’t do it, so it`s a very personal stuff.

In the end of this, a last personal advice: always try to put yourself in the place of your character. For example you play simple free girl from a village, living a carefree life in your small happy family and the Tartars kidnap you and sell you as a slave. How would you react? What would you feel about your new situation? How would you adapt to it, how much would take you to adapt to it? How would you take the separation from your loving parents and siblings? Consider all the aspects of you ‘life’ and try play your character realistic. And don’t forget to have fun! If it`s no fun for you, then don’t do it.
